Police Make Arrest in Napier Street Shooting

On August 28, 2023, at 12:55am Sarnia Police Service officers responded to the front doors of the SPS building for a male in obvious distress. Officers responded and quickly determined that this male had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officers performed life saving first aid on the victim until he was handed over to Lambton County Paramedics.

Investigation revealed the victim had fled for his life from a residence on Napier Street, after being shot at with a 9mm handgun. He had been shot once in the neck, once in the chest, and in the back of one arm. The victim suffered permanent damage to his arm and throat.

The Sarnia Police Service, Criminal Investigations Division, launched a lengthy investigation into the incident. The Sarnia Police Service’s Forensic Unit was heavily utilized, as was the services of the Center of Forensic Sciences.

As a result of this investigation, the Sarnia Police Service formed grounds to charge Craig Dooley, 18 years of Sarnia, in this shooting. Information received was that Dooley had left the Sarnia area and a Canada Wide Warrant was subsequently obtained for his arrest.

On February 26, 2024 while crossing into Canada from the United States of America, at the Huntington border crossing in British Columbia, Craig Dooley was arrested by Canada Border Services. The Sarnia Police Service travelled to British Columbia returned him to Sarnia on March 1st. He was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody until March 4th on the following charges:

  • Attempt Murder, contrary to section 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Discharging a firearm with intent, contrary to section 244(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose  88(1)
  • Possession of a Firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized 92(a)
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition 95(1)
